Starting with 5 bottles of vodka and 4 family size bags of Skittles, we show you each step to infusing Skittles and vodka, including the filtering process that worked best for us. One key to remember is that you’ll need about 10 Skittles for each ounce of vodka. Another shortcut that I found is that 250 Skittles is a little more than one cup. 750 ml of vodka is close to 25 ounces, so one heavy cup of Skittles will make one fifth of Skittles vodka.
The time consuming part is the straining and filtering process. I studied how other people saw fit to filter Skittles vodka, and I came up with some ideas of my own. Cheesecloth is an excellent way to get the first 3 or 4 rounds of leftover candy residue. After that, we tried coffee filters, and later a hand strainer and coffee filters together, which was a much better idea. The hand strainer picked up a lot of the leftover floaties, and the coffee filters took a long time, but seemed to do a little bit as well. For the last stages of filtering the candy infused vodka, I used a French press that I normally use for coffee. The mesh filter is fine enough to get the smallest chunks of Skittles foam, and this is by far the quickest filtering stage.
After we filmed this episode, I actually went back and filtered the Skittles vodka one last time with the coffee press to get the last of the dissolved candy foam. That time, I ran each flavor about five times. All in all, each bottle was filtered about 15 times or more. This seems like a lot of work, but it actually goes pretty fast if you have one person filtering and one person rinsing the containers. To filter all five bottles took about an hour, maybe up to an hour and a half if you count the additional filtering the next day.
