Yummy Recipes For Kids – Steamed Idli

Recipe

Ingredients:
2 Cups Rice
1 Cup Urad Daal (white gram whole)
Pinch of Baking Soda
Oil for Greasing

Method:

A. Preparing the Batter

1) Wash Rice and Urad Dal Several times and soak them in enough water for 4 hours. Soaking overnight is recommended but 4 hours is more than enough.

2) After 4 hours drain the water and add the mixture to the wet grinder. Do not discard the water. You can use it for grinding. Grind this into a smooth batter adding water at regular intervals. (Adding water is important as this will help in bringing out soft idlis)

3) Add 2 tsp Salt and a pinch of Baking Soda to the mixture and mix it nicely with your hands or spatula.

4) Keep it in a container and allow it to ferment for 8 to 10 hours.

B. Steaming the Idlis

5) Grease the idli pan with some oil and fill each of them with ¾ th full of batter.

6) Steam cook idlis on medium flame for about 10 minutes.

7) Now Remove from flame and slide the idlis out on a plate or banana leaf with a spoon or a blunt knife.

Your Steamy Idlis are now Ready to Be Served
with some hot sambhar or cold coconut chutney.
You can also have this with a garlic / mint chutney.

This Recipe yields 12 – 15 mid sized idlis, fit for 4-5 persons.
